What is technical communication?
Most people think that technical communication is just about writing technical documents, but that’s not true. It’s about
writing, creating, and visually communicating with others around the world. Before I found out about technical
communication, I didn’t know who I was or what I wanted to do with my life. It was through technical communication
that I discovered what my passions are: creating and writing.
What I do
Document design and writing are my specialties. I enjoy creating documents and designing them in a way that gets a
specific message across to a variety of audiences. I use design software such as Photoshop to not only edit and
manipulate photos, but also to create flyers and digital displays. For example, I recently made a couple of motivational
displays that were seen in schools around Utah to encourage them to graduate from high school and to attend college.
Not only is design really important in any given document, but the content is equally important. What good is a design
if nobody understands what it means? I seek to bring graphics and content to create a better understanding of what is
happening around us. There is great power in the words that we use, and I want to use those words to write about
events, my own life, and even the occasional fictional writing.
So how do I use my creating and writing skills? I aim to create things that people want to see and help them to gain
information. Not only that, but I want to help with creating advertisements, specifically for events and businesses.
With a team, I conducted a research study on how to increase awareness of the USU Museum of Anthropology.
After surveys and interviews, we discovered what ways students prefer to hear about events and what the most
effective way to do that was. While social media plays a big part in that, we also learned that lawn advertisements are
the most effective because they are seen more often and don’t get lost in the news feed. I want to put this into practice
by creating advertisements that grab people’s attention and help them be more aware of events that are happening
around them.
I am a technical communicator. This is who I am, and this is what I do.
